The Hasselblad Award for 1999 has been awarded to Cindy Sherman on the grounds that “Cindy Sherman set a new agenda for contemporary photography in the nineteen-seventies. By her use of staged photography, and her positioning of herself as the central character within a complex set of scenarios, Cindy Sherman has explored and challenged important cultural, critical and social preconceptions.”

About the Artist:
Cindy Sherman is an American photographer and film director, best known for her conceptual portraits. In 1995, she was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. Sherman works in series, typically photographing herself in a range of costumes. To create her photographs, Sherman shoots alone in her studio, assuming multiple roles as author, director, make-up artist, hairstylist, wardrobe mistress, and model.

About the Author:
Joanna Lowry is a theorist who writes on contemporary photography, video and fine art. Much of her writing has taken the form of critical reviews and catalogue essays in journals such as Creative Camera, Portfolio, and Photoworks, and through these she has engaged with the developing emergence of photography as a key form of practice in the contemporary art world. She is course leader for the MA Photography in University of Bristol. Lowry’s research interests revolve around the impact of photographic technologies upon late twentieth century and contemporary art practices, but also upon the way in which those practices have contributed to changing ideas about the nature of the photographic image.

About the Publisher:
Since 1980, the Hasselblad Center in Sweden has offered a yearly award to a major figure in photography whose work is internationally known. Past winners have included Koudelka, Meiselas, Sherman, and for 2002, Jeff Wall. In October of each year an exhibition is mounted and a catalogue is published.
