The exhibition Growing Vegetables on a Coral Island offers insights into alternative and sustainable food production. In 2002 Søren Dahlgaard moved to the Maldives with his Maldivian wife and their child in order to build up an ecosystem on the 17-hectare island of Hibalhidhoo over a two year period. As an experiment Dahlgaard wanted to make the Maldives self-sufficient in vegetables, despite the islands’ limited agricultural potential with soil that is too sandy and water that is too salty. Growing Vegetables on a Coral Island recreates parts of and shows documentary material from the ‘greenhouse project’ in the Maldives.

The exhibition is made in collaboration with the photo gallery Galleri Image in Aarhus.
