3 photographs, most of them unpublished, show off the artistic achievements of Carlos and Miguel Vargas.

The two brothers gained fame as a result of their studio portraits and night-time shots of Arequipa. Engaged with pictorial trends, they sought to put photography on a par with the other arts, without sidelining the commercial vision of the medium, and explored its technical possibilities. Together with the portraits of figures from the bourgeoisie and the art world, portrayed in an official or festive way, there are also scenes of the daily life of the city and its customs.

This historical document on the political, social and cultural background of Peru in the first decades of the 20th century includes a text by Mario Vargas Llosa.
